If you’re reading this, I assume you’re either an existing fishing charter or guide, or a new startup, and are looking for ways to capture more (or all) of your leads with your fishing marketing. Either way, I will do my best to break down what is necessary to have an online marketing machine for your fishing business that just works, and without hours invested in time each week (in fact minutes). Now also keep in mind, the person writing this started designing websites in the outdoors niche back in 2002. So over the course of time since, there aren’t very many scenarios I haven’t seen anymore. If you work with as many fishing guides and charters as we do, it starts to all kind of blend together. I want to lead off first and foremost by saying, ALL WEBSITES ARE NOT BUILT THE SAME. Just because you have a relative or a buddy’s son (or whatever) that built you a website for cheap…doesn’t mean it’s going to do much for lead-generation. If someone calls us and the first question is price…it rarely goes well. Not because we’re expensive (quite the opposite, actually), but because that person probably doesn’t understand what goes into a GOOD website to begin with.  Truth is, there is A LOT going on with most of our websites that people don't even realize.

So if we’re going to talk about web design for fishing charters or guides, I usually have the same ingredients (with different looks, of course). When I say ingredients, I mean every website SHOULD follow a certain set of “rules” in the page’s design. Not only should the page DRIVE potential clients to each page we build, we also do everything necessary to CONVERT them into a booking.


And while I would love to talk about what goes into all those ingredients…so would my competitors, so some things let’s just say work for us. But I can’t say it enough, at the end of the day, your fishing charter website should be filling your calendar. If not, what are you paying for?

First off, most websites, in my opinion, are way too busy to begin with. While it may look “cool” to have all this stuff going on, at the end of the day, it’s too much for most. If you’re a fishing charter or fishing guide and are wanting your website to produce leads, then let’s JUST focus on that. While that sounds obvious, it’s not done very often even still today.


And EVERY page we build here at Flyway Media is designed to rank highly on Google for your business and its descriptions. A prime example are “About Us” pages. Why? Not only are they rarely clicked on to begin with, it usually has great content that could and should be used elsewhere. I could go on about “dead pages” but we rarely build them here for any reason.


Again, we’re trying to fill calendars here. That is our goal no matter what we do with the website design and marketing.

EASY TO BOOK FISHING TRIPS ONLINE


This is also something that seems obvious but is rarely done right. Every website should ALWAYS have a Call-To-Action button somewhere. A “Call-to-Action” are things like phone buttons to call, buttons to book, etc. DON’T FORCE THE POTENTIAL CUSTOMER TO SEARCH HOW TO CONTACT YOU. Again, seems super obvious but I see the opposite almost daily.


And not only should it be easy to contact you, it should also be easy to book if you’re incorporating a booking calendar into your fishing website. I get into what all goes into our booking calendar/CRM in a bit, but let’s just say I demoed products for almost 18 months before we found the solution we use. I will get into the reasons in depth, but at the end of the day, I’ve never heard a client complain that their customer had a hard time booking with the calendar. That matters, at least, to me.

When someone comes to your website, you HAVE TO make a solid first impression out of the gate. I will get into statistics in a bit, but you have up to 3 seconds normally for a visitor to decide whether to stay or leave. It’s just that simple, and it’s proven.


So how do you make a solid first impression? VIDEO if you have it, almost every time. AND if you’re going to use video, it has to be done RIGHT. By that I mean, the page needs to still fall under the 3 second rule or it could end up hurting you. Trust me, most web designers aren’t familiar with the effect of video load times, sadly enough. Clearwater River Outfitters - A salmon fishing charter in Idaho that has great video in the background as well.  Not only did they incorporate drone footage, but lots of fishing highlights as well.  These sites convert very well.

Now tell me, after visiting those 2 sites, did you not feel at least a LITTLE engaged by those videos??? Now, not every fishing charter or guide has video footage either. But if you work with us, we may politely ask you to film some. And yes, we will explain the best way to approach it, too. And before it goes into the website, we do final edits to ensure not only quality, but speed are in place.

BOUNCE RATE MATTERS IN YOUR FISHING MARKETING WEBSITE

Here are a few facts to think about when designing websites for fishing business (or in general).


  • Studies have shown that mobile website users form an opinion about the website in half a second.
  • Also, according to Google, “53% of mobile website users won’t wait longer than 3 seconds for a website to load before hitting the back button”. 


And for those of you who don’t know, hitting the back button is called a BOUNCE. And if your BOUNCE RATE is high, you usually don’t rank well on Google. Yes, there are some exceptions, but trust me…Google knows your website’s bounce rate and factors it in your SEO.  They simply don't want to keep serving pages to users who consistently bounce from your website.


Are you curious where your website is on speed? Now before you look, the results may SHOCK you. More often than not, fishing related website design is dominated by slow, bloated WordPress websites. And if you know your website is built on WordPress, brace yourself.

Here’s a prime example of what I see ALL THE TIME in this industry. My phone rings and the fishing guide tells me he’s struggling for bookings…so when I look at his website it’s pretty clear why. I am hiding the website domain for obvious reasons, but the website design company is a pretty big player and this is what they’re putting out.

If you don’t know what this means, I will break it down.


FIRST CONTENTFUL PAINT is how long for the screen/website to load in general (instead of BLANK). So they say it needs to be under 3 seconds, but this one is over 11. 


And what’s worse, the LARGEST CONTENTFUL PAINT is how long the whole website takes to load and it’s WELL over a minute (81.2 seconds). Who in their right mind wants to sit and wait that long for a page to load to make a decision? It sucks guys, but I see this ALL THE TIME.

Not only do we fall under the 3 seconds, we even stay under 5 while showing video in the background, too. And with that being said, if you have video…that is your friend online. ;-) Statistics have shown time and time again that quality video in the background or in the site will increase your user’s time on your website significantly.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is usually the main reason people come to Flyway Media in the first place. I did get into this in detail earlier, so I will be brief on this again. I cannot stress enough the importance in website speed.  It can have not only an effect on your Google search rankings, but you’ll simply lose a lot of opportunities from customers hitting the back button. As I stated earlier, I literally spent almost a year and a half looking at competing booking calendar options online. If you haven’t looked, trust me…THERE ARE A LOT. And most of them were the same to me, and that was a problem. 


The only way I like to use booking calendars, is if it’s inserted and formatted INSIDE OF THE WEBSITE. I don’t like popups, and I don’t like buttons or links that open a new window that may or may not look like your website. That scares more people away than you know.

One of the coolest features, in my opinion, is how our booking calendar also ties into a CRM. CRM stands for Customer Relationship Manager. If you don’t know what that means and you’re still using a paper calendar…PAY ATTENTION. ;-)


ALL of your leads and clients will be in a database with their contact information such as phone/email. This allows you to market to them at any time down the road.


Also, we highly suggest using AUTOMATION for your fishing marketing. When I say automation I mean letting the software do A LOT of the time and heavy lifting for you.

Day before, 3 days before, etc….it’s all up to you. And it can be scripted and built so it doesn’t look like a “bot” did it, either. It’ll look like you wrote it personally.


And, you can send a thank you text and/or email after the fishing trip. And yes…you can send holiday or ANY type of promotion to them down the road, too.

So earlier, I touched on Google Business Profiles when I was talking about SEO. But I thought I’d go in depth more.


Outside of posting fishing reports and to social media, you should really have your reports flow into your Google Business Profile as well.


Not only is it great information to make your profile more attractive, but the added content can help your ranking on search results over time, too.


First off, and if you’re going to understand the best practices for your Google Business Profile, you better know what it is! Go to Google and search for “restaurant near me”.


The results, like shown, will give a “3-pack” of search results, and a link below that to VIEW MORE. While there is occasionally a sponsored listing too, it can get very expensive over time for simply the opportunity to rank. At the end of the day, you want to do it organically for a lot of reasons including cost and overall lead generation.


Here’s also a little secret about Google Business Profiles. If you know what you’re doing, you can actually utilize it to help boost your website rankings as well as the Google Business Profile itself. That’s as much as I will touch on that, but let’s just say we got that all covered for you.


Also, outside of general contact information and reports, did you also know you can utilize your Google Business Profile to book, too? If the tools are available and properly used, it can be another driver of your leads.

One thing you need to understand, is that Google Business Profile marketing is similar to website design SEO.  It's a long-term approach to the process. When I say process, I mean it doesn’t happen overnight. If there were a couple easy hacks to get you to rank at the top automatically…don’t you think everyone would do it? I always say online marketing for fishing charters is a marathon, not a sprint. But with the proper plan in place, you’re simply going to benefit from those efforts.

It’s no secret that Facebook is the social media of the “old farts”.  According to Statistica, here are the average age groups that use Facebook.


Now with the age groups shown, who do you think are booking fishing trips? Still today, it’s hard to beat Facebook for marketing your fishing business. Yes, there’s a lot of noise and BS on Facebook, but so are engaged, potential bookers.


And to use Facebook appropriately for your business, the main thing is simply to keep it updated. And a large volume of fishing guides simply don’t have the time, patience, or knowledge of Facebook to take full advantage.


What if I told you we can set it up so you literally don’t have to ever go ON Facebook for your profile to be updated? I will explain more what I mean.

While Meta is the owner of Facebook, they’re also the owners of Instagram, too. 


Now, Instagram doesn’t have the depth of the older groups, but they are strong in those in their 20’s and 30’s. That demographic certainly books fishing trips as well.


And because Instagram is owned by the same company as Facebook, it makes the integration pretty simple as well.


All you need to do, is have a business Facebook page AND a business Instagram account. After that, simply connect them so when you share from one, it posts to the other automatically.


Usually, we recommend to our fishing charter clients to post their fishing reports and updates to Instagram, and have it shared to Facebook. Why? Well first of all, there’s no better social media for photos like IG. Whether or not you like all the editing tools and features, it is the superior social for that. And the best part about the OUTPUT of Instagram? The pics are ALWAYS a square. And why does that matter? Because we want to pull that data into the website, too!

Fishing Guide Websites That Integrate with Instagram


When you’re pulling posts from Instagram into your website, and you know how the content is coming, it makes it actually pretty easy to not only integrate into your fishing website…but styled to match as well.


There are a bunch of “Widgets” on the web that you can copy/paste and drop it into your website. Usually, they look very generic and don’t mesh well with the website design.  In other words, it looks almost tacky.


We like to make it FLOW well into the website.

How long to post to Instagram? 1 or 2 minutes? I usually joke that tags take longer than anything but that’s not something you need to worry about (leave it to us ha!).


And by spending 2 minutes on your marketing, you’re keeping your Instagram updated, Facebook updated, AND fresh content to keep your website up to date, too. Can you tell me a more efficient and effective way to cover these 3 bases??? I’m all ears…

The other social media you should consider is Youtube. Not only is it the 2nd most visited website in the world (behind Google), it’s also a great place to help supplement your fishing charter online marketing. 


And for those who post often, yes, we can pull those videos into our websites as well, easily.

Now, are there other social media options for Fishing Charter and Guides online? Yes and no.


Yes there are a few that you can use, but it’s either too complex or simply not fitting your age target market. That’s a good thing, however, in that you don’t need to focus on a dozen social media accounts. Just focus on the big 3 mentioned, and I promise you’ll be fine. ;-)
